The story of the IMSA GTLM C8.R
The Corvette is no stranger to success in the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) series, as is evident from Corvette Racing’s dominance in the 2020 season. In that year of competition alone, Corvette Racing won a total of six victories, as well as seven pole positions. The Corvette C8.R also recorded the fastest lap recorded in six individual races during that same period.
Chevrolet was quick to capitalize on this unprecedented wave of success, releasing a special-edition 2022 IMSA GTLM Championship C8 Corvette, for sale to the general public. This commemorative C8 was first unveiled to the press at Belle Island in Detroit last summer. This unveiling was soon followed by the announcement that a limited run of just 1,000 IMSA GTLM Championship C8 Corvettes were to be produced.
A hot ticket
Immediately after this unveiling, consumers started clamoring for the opportunity to become one of the lucky few to own their own IMSA GTLM C8 championship. Chevrolet filled all 1,000 orders for the race-inspired commemorative C8 in record time as production began.
Those lucky enough to place their order before the mandatory production cap was reached were treated to a handful of IMSA GTLM C8 championship variants to choose from. The Championship C8 was offered in Accelerate Yellow and Hypersonic Gray configurations, either of which could be optional as a coupe or convertible.
After all the orders were tallied, the C8 IMSA GTLM Championship, in its convertible form, proved to be coveted above all else, accounting for 53% of all sales. Meanwhile, ⅔ of all Corvettes produced during this limited run sported the Hypersonic Gray livery.
The greatness of IMSA GTLM C8 2022 personalities
The design of the 2022 IMSA GTLM Championship C8 convertible was heavily influenced by the C8.R for which it is named. Careful attention has been paid to improving the C8’s performance in every discernible way, while sparing no expense in authenticating the car’s commemorative status.
All C8 convertibles in the IMSA GTLM Championship started life as 2022 3LTs, equipped with Chevrolet’s Z51 Performance Package. Selecting the C8.R IMSA package cost an additional $6,595 to purchase.
The 2022 IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R package was perhaps most notable for its inclusion of numerous exterior modifications. Some of the more recognizable modifications included the addition of a high wing Carbon Splash spoiler, Carbon Flash mirrors, custom yellow painted brake calipers, Black Trident wheels, black side rockers and inspired splash guards of the race.
A series of interior refinements were equally unmistakable thanks to this commemorative set. The IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Convertible featured specialized Strike Yellow and Sky Cool Gray interior trim, along with custom yellow seat belts. GT2 seats were also standard, although competition sport seats were also offered as an option.
Additionally, all IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R convertibles were fitted with a special edition commemorative plaque, with numerical production designations. Purchase of the IMSA GTLM C8.R Championship included a bespoke indoor car cover configured to match the consumer’s choice in a color scheme.
The IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Convertible was driven by GM’s powerful 6.2L LT2 V8 engine, which produced a total output of 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Power was distributed via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Other technical highlights associated with the IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Convertible include the inclusion of variable front lift control and paddle-shift transmission interface.
An instant classic
As mentioned, the IMSA GTLM C8.R championship is anything but plentiful, fueling a degree of banter around the future values of this commemorative Corvette. Many have speculated that the Championship C8.R is poised to become one of the most sought-after specialty Corvettes of all time, with astronomical selling prices at future auto auctions.
While only time will confirm or disprove this notion, it’s safe to assume that the IMSA GTLM C8.R Championship will remain a coveted centerpiece of Corvette enthusiasts’ collections for decades to come. For all intents and purposes, the IMSA GTLM Championship Corvette C8.R is poised to become another classic version of the American sports car of undeniable exemplary value.
